Our carriers on the India-Netherlands route
On shipping routes from India, carriers differ widely in speed and reliability. That's why our platform shows you not only the price per carrier, but also its performance on the India-Netherlands route. So you choose who ships your cargo.

Sea freight India costs: how rates are built up
Rates for sea freight from India move strongly with the market. An average therefore tells you little: what you pay depends on your port of departure, the container type and when you book. You'll find current rates and transit times per route on the shipping from India to the Netherlands page.
On top of that, a quote often covers only the ocean leg. Items such as Terminal Handling Charges (THC), customs clearance and transport to your warehouse are added separately later. With Cargoplot, you see upfront:
- Current rates per carrier: compare sea freight rates from India side by side.
- All-in costs: see upfront what your shipment costs up to your warehouse, with every cost item listed separately, from customs to delivery.
- Our margin: we show what we earn, so you know you're paying a fair rate.
Which import duties and VAT apply on top depends on your product's HS code. With an Article 23 permit, you don't have to pre-finance import VAT. On the sea freight rates page, you can read which items make up a sea freight rate.

Which ports in India do we ship from?
Cargoplot ships to the Netherlands from seven Indian ports: Mundra, Mumbai, Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Ennore, Chennai, Tuticorin and Kolkata. Mundra is the most used port of departure among our customers. You'll find rates, transit times and port data on the matching route page. Shipping from other countries in Asia as well? The page on sea freight from Asia shows all routes.
Is your cargo coming from North India, for example the Delhi region? Then it almost always goes to the port by train. Several trains run every day, and over those distances rail is cheaper than trucking.
With sea freight from India, the ocean leg is only part of the lead time: transport to the port in India and customs handling often determine how much buffer you need. In the Cargoplot platform you track your container along the way, so you can align your planning with your shipment's arrival in good time.
Pro tip: during the monsoon season, from June to September, flooding in India can delay transport to the port. It's hard to predict, so allow some extra room in your planning during those months.

For customs you need at least a commercial invoice, a packing list and the transport document (bill of lading), plus an EORI number in your company's name. Your Indian supplier needs an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) for export. Agree with your supplier that they provide complete documents that follow your instructions: incomplete documents are a common cause of delays on shipments from India. Which Incoterm should I choose when importing from India?
For imports from India, we usually recommend FOB: your supplier arranges transport to the port and the export declaration, and once the goods are on board, you're in control. With EXW, you depend on local transport in India that's hard to arrange yourself. Also agree that your supplier doesn't book transport without your approval, so you decide who ships your cargo. Read more about the differences in our introduction to Incoterms.
